Preliminary Exercise: “The Detective”

In this skit, I wanted to demonstrate the 180° rule, the rule of two-thirds, jump cut, and invisible editing. For my next exercise, I would like to create a less comical clip and I would like to demonstrate more match on action and graphical matching so that I have practice for it when it comes time to create my film opening.

I used the rule of two-thirds throughout this clip and specifically focused on it during the close-up of character 1 (the detective character). I also tried to make sure the character's eyes fell on the top line of the two-thirds grid

I demonstrated a jump cut when I went from the “interrogation” scene to the “rampage” scene. I abruptly switched from one action to another and changed the coloring of the scene to create a clear difference. I used this technique for comedic effect to show viewers that character 2 (the suspect) was indeed, guilty.

For my next video, I will aim to demonstrate some more editing techniques. I would like to play around with the coloring and aesthetics of my next project as well to give it a different look. I also want to explore using overlays and clipping masks in my future works to create more interesting transitions between scenes.
